Change Zoom Settings from their Default


    Zoom profile settings should be adjusted before your first meeting with students.

    If you prefer, images of these settings are available at the bottom of this document.


    These settings can be accessed from this page:

    "On" indicates that the switch should be blue.

    "**" indicates that this is a sub-setting.


Meeting


Schedule Meeting

  1. Mute Participants Upon Entry: On
    If a participant arrives late, they will not interrupt discussion with their audio.
  2. Upcoming Meeting Reminder: On

In Meeting (Basic)

  1. Private Chat: Off
    This prevents students from having side-conversations during a session.
    You can allow this using the Zoom chat controls during a session.
  2. Play Sound: On, 
  3. **heard by host only: On
     
    It is possible that you will not know a student has joined unless a sound is played.
  4. Allow host to put attendee on hold: On
    If there is a problem with technical aspects, behavior, boundaries, etc., you can remove the user from the session.
    They will be put into a 'waiting room' until you are ready to readmit them.
  5. Always show meeting control bar: Off
    This is important to set as off if you plan on using Zoom to record lessons or full-screen video.
    If you are new to Zoom and you feel it will be helpful, this can be set to "On."
  6. Show Zoom windows during screen share: On
    If you need to help a student with Zoom, it allows you to choose the Zoom window to share with the user.
  7. Whiteboard: On, 
  8.  ** auto-save: On
    Whiteboard content will be automatically saved at the end of a session.
  9. Nonverbal feedback: On
    Please keep in mind that this will not work on all devices.
  10. Allow removed participants to rejoin: On
    This permits those participants removed - for tech or other issues - to rejoin the meeting.


In Meeting (Advanced)

  1. Breakout room: On, 
  2. ** allow host to assign: On
    You can group students into separate rooms, send messages to the rooms, set time-limits, and visit each room.
  3. Closed Captioning: On
    If a student requires captioning, you can potential enlist someone to type captions or link to a 3rd party captioning service.  We do not currently subscribe to such a service.
  4. Save Captions: On
  5. Allow users to select stereo audio: On
    This setting can potentially help with clarity of audio.
  6. Waiting room: On
    This allows you the ability to admit users to the meeting.   
    It also ensures that no one is in the meeting until you are ready for it to begin.
  7. Show a "join from your browser link": On
    Students using Chromebooks will need to use this link.

Other

  1. Blur snapshot on iOS task switcher: On
    If you share your desktop and use Alt-tab to switch between open apps, this ensures that users will not see the icons clear enough to view contents of the windows you have open.


Recording

  1. Recording disclaimer: On
  2. Multiple audio notifications of recorded meeting: On
    These settings ensure that students know they are being recorded.  
    Students must request permission from you to record a session.  This can be allowed within the Zoom meeting interface.
